MISTA by Jim Jones Markham

I realize that the train has left the station for Scarborough CSIO and nothing will change as their main focus is for the carded athlete. Our vision for MISTA is for sports training for 10-15,000 athletes from Markham, Toronto and the GTA going through our facility on a daily basis. MISTA’s main focus is on a strong sport clubs and membership base system with a million square feet dedicated to amateur sports which includes all the supporting sports infrastructure.

We have an absolutely superior site, superior location, clean site, superior plan for amateur sports, superior road and transit access for over 90% of the people in Toronto and the GTA, superior sustainability. The project won't be a drain on the taxpayers of Ontario. Approximately 2,500-5,000 people and jobs in every direction will be able to walk to this facility. Over 20,000 people will be living or working within 500-700 meters of MISTA. This is one of the reason why MISTA will be highly successful. The Scarborough site has no one living or working within these distances and will have to depend on Ontario and Federal grants to keep it afloat forever.

With PAN AM and Infrastructure Ontario, we have the case of the tail wagging the dog. Markham has a $800 million investment opportunity from China and PAN AM and IO are insisting they have to build the pool at inflated dollars and whatever attaches to the pool (Badminton), or we lose the $30 million even though Markham will be financing probably an additional $80 million for the pool and badminton components for 2015 PAN AM Games.

90% of the Olympic national sporting and Ontario bodies want to be at the Markham facility. We have very serious offshore investors who want to build, own and manage this $800 million MISTA investment opportunity which also includes 300,000 sq ft of office, a 4 star hotel, 200,000 plus square feet of retail and 1500-2000 condo units on top of 2,000-2,500 structure parking now on 15 acres of Town owned land.

We have a major master planning opportunity to create a sports campus with linkages to Bill Crothers Sports Secondary School just across Enterprise Drive.

I have been assured by our architects that we could have the sports facility portion of MISTA ready by the second half of 2014 especially the pool and badminton component and the rest by 1st quarter of 2015 if we can eliminate all of the bureaucracy and create a sense of urgency to the MISTA development.

The Markham City centre is approximately a $20 billion plan and MISTA is one of the cornerstones of it. Located a few urban blocks away from a major Metrolinx rail transit hub, MISTA will be.

The most important aspect for MISTA is to nail down the master planning/programming for this significant public private partnership.
